Netherlands and Denmark Do Not Want Ukraine in EU

Ukraine will not be able to receive candidate status in the EU due to the position of the Netherlands and Denmark, which expressed their opposition to the country’s admission to the bloc. This was reported by Bloomberg on 9 June, citing knowledgeable sources.

Denmark said that Ukraine does not meet the criteria related to the stability of institutions guaranteeing democracy, the rule of law, human rights, respect and protection of minorities. The Netherlands said Kiev needs to “fundamentally improve its legislative and institutional framework” in order to make progress in all these areas.

Germany offers the option of granting Ukraine “conditional” candidate status as a compromise.

Earlier, members of the European Parliament were known to have supported granting Ukraine candidate status to the EU.

“The final conclusion of the European Commission, even if it is positive, will require the approval of all member states before Ukraine is officially granted the status,” the agency noted.

The bloc’s leaders are set to discuss the issue in Brussels on 23-24 June. The EU accession process includes a set of steps and conditions that may take more than 10 years to complete.
