Media: UK Food Industry on the Verge of Collapse Due to Sanctions Against Russia

The Telegraph reports that the British food industry is on the verge of collapse due to rising energy costs amid anti-Russian sanctions. Earlier, CF Fertilizers announced the closure of the country’s largest plant near Chester, which provided farmland with nitrogen fertilizers. The organisation said it could no longer afford to run the plant in the face of soaring gas prices and high environmental taxes.

Tom Bradshaw, deputy head of the National Farmers Union (NFU), said the news of the plant shutdown was another blow to British farmers, who were already suffering from incredibly high inflation.

According to Joe Gilbertson, a specialist from the Confederation of Agricultural Industries, the shortage of nitrogen fertiliser will affect the cost of milk, meat and bread. Grain imports are now extremely difficult because of the worsening Ukrainian crisis, he said.

High fertiliser costs will not allow farmers to grow enough wheat for flour production, NFU experts said. The price of raw materials has risen from £200 a tonne before the pandemic to around £625 in recent months.
