Germany’s prosperity is at risk without Russian gas

Refusal of energy supplies from Russia may cause the end of Germany’s prosperity. This warning was made by Robert Habeck, Vice Chancellor, Minister of Economy of Germany, on air of the TV channel ZDF.

The minister pointed out that Germany lacks the infrastructure to import gas and oil by other ways, so the refusal to supply energy resources from Russia may hit the German industry and lead to the closure of major enterprises. “I took an oath and I cannot risk my country’s prosperity,” Habeck said.

He explained if Berlin imposes an embargo on resources from Russia, it could lead to the closure of the world’s largest chemical company BASF. The threat already arises when current gas supplies are halved. Habeck is also concerned that shortages of resources could  lead to energy companies migration abroad, for example to Asia.

The minister has previously urged against a possible boycott of Russian gas in order to avoid a split in business and society. The gas issue threatens to endanger hundreds of thousands of jobs in energy-intensive and other industries, according to the East German Economic Committee.
