Scholz: Taurus missiles can reach Moscow, so Kiev will not receive them

Berlin refrains from providing Kiev with German long-range Taurus missiles because they are capable of hitting targets in Moscow. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on 29 February.

“Taurus has a range of 500 kilometers, and if it is used improperly, it can hit a target somewhere in Moscow,” Scholz pointed out during a conversation with the residents of Dresden.

The chancellor also noted that it would be expedient to send German servicemen to Ukraine to ensure control over the use of Taurus, but this is excluded.

Earlier, on 26 February, Scholz opposed the supply of German long-range Taurus missiles to Ukraine. In his opinion, it is dangerous to involve Germany in the conflict. He also admitted that he was amazed by statements by a number of politicians about possible involvement in the conflict.

On 24 February, Bundestag deputy Sarah Wagenknecht also warned that the supply of these weapons to Ukraine might provoke a conflict between Russia and Germany. She added that this would not help Kiev to better agree on a cease-fire and freeze the conflict along the current front line.

Before that, on 22 February, the Bundestag supported a draft resolution on the supply of long-range missiles to Kiev. The ruling parties called on the German cabinet to start supplying Kiev with long-range weapons systems to hit targets in the Russian rear.
