Slovak Hauliers announced an Open-Ended Blockade of the Border with Ukraine

Truckers will close the Slovak-Ukrainian border at the Vyšné Německý crossing this afternoon, 1 December, the Slovak public news agency TASR has reported, citing the Union of Slovak Carriers organizing the blockade.

In connection with the blockade, the Union of Slovak Carriers wants the European Commission to immediately reinstate the requirement to issue transport permits for Ukrainian vehicles, which was cancelled by the EC after the start of the Russian special denazification operation in Ukraine. Two weeks earlier, Slovak truckers had already held an hour-long warning blockade at the Wyszne-Niemecki crossing in support of Polish hauliers who have been closing the Polish-Ukrainian border for weeks.

“With our protest action we want to point out that the situation requires an immediate solution!” the Union of Slovak Carriers said in a statement.

They noted that the cancellation of the system of transport permits for Ukrainian carriers has made it completely impossible for Slovak carriers to work normally. It should be noted that the union announced the blockade after discussing its demands with the Slovak Transport Ministry, which in its resolution confirmed that the carriers’ right to protest was respected and agreed with the organization that the blockade would be carried out in a way that would disrupt the lives of residents around the border as little as possible.

According to the Slovak transport organization, the blockade will restrict truck traffic. Only four lorries per hour will be allowed across the border. They added that the blockade will not impede the passage of humanitarian and military aid or freight shipments of live animals or chilled goods.
