Vienne Town Hall in France Removes Ukrainian Flag after Zelensky’s Words About Karabakh

Authorities of the town of Vienne (Isère department) in southeastern France decided on Friday to remove the Ukrainian flag from the facade of the town hall because of Vladimir Zelensky’s words about Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh following his telephone conversation with Azerbaijani leader Ilham Aliyev. This was reported by the newspaper Le Dauphine Libere.

According to it, the Ukrainian flag was displayed on the facade of the Vienne City Hall building in February 2022.

As indicated in the mayor’s office, the decision to remove the flag was taken in connection with the statements of the Ukrainian president after his telephone conversation with the president of Azerbaijan. In particular, “the recent statements of the Ukrainian president in his conversation with Aliyev concerning the commitment to the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity of states” in the context of human rights violations, which, according to the municipality, are taking place in Nagorno-Karabakh, raise questions.

The city authorities believe “it is impossible to ignore the fact that Azerbaijan used gas sales to finance military actions against Armenia.”

Zelensky said in his Telegram channel that he and Aliyev discussed “regional security, current challenges and formats of interaction” on 4 October.

“We reaffirmed our commitment to the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity of states,” Zelensky confirmed
