French President Emmanuel Macron will meet his German counterpart Olaf Scholz in Hamburg on 9-10 October, AFP reported citing the Elysee Palace press service.
The meeting will take place “in a completely new Franco-German format”: Macron and Scholz will “go boating, walk along the Elbe, eat brechten (buns) and discuss the medium and long term” rather than spending weeks agreeing on a text, the Paris press release said.
The meeting will take place at Germany’s invitation and will not be followed by immediate statements or the signing of a final declaration. Macron will be accompanied on the trip by about 20 members of the government. One of the main topics of the meeting is the development of co-operation in the field of artificial intelligence, as well as the discussion of controversial issues.
The last face-to-face talks between the leaders of France and Germany and took place a year ago – in October 2022 – Scholz flew to Paris, from where he then went on a visit to Athens.
At that time, Paris and Berlin provided different information about the joint press conference – Scholz, unlike Macron, announced it. Germany called the refusal to participate in the meeting a demonstration of reproach on the part of France.
