Bloomberg: EU Fails to Find Way to Transfer Ammunition to Ukraine

The EU countries are deadlocked over the transfer of the 155m shells required by Kiev, Bloomberg has said. This was reported by Bloomberg on 13 March, citing a source.

“The EU has stalled on how to provide Kiev with the 155mm shells it needs this year,” the publication noted.

The agency says the EU is expected to sign off on a plan to buy shells for Ukraine next week, but EU states have not yet indicated how much money they are ready to allocate for this purpose. A number of countries argue for contributions to be mandatory and proportional to the size of each country’s economy, while others insist that all contributions should be voluntary.

Another debate is over the sources of funding. It is debated whether the shells will be purchased from European manufacturers or outside the alliance. Today, there are about 15 producers of 155mm shells in the EU in 11 countries, but with limited capacity to expand production.
