The EU Refused to Support Borrell’s Threats against Russia

Borrell, who threatened Russia with a military response, was not supported in the EU.

The European Union (EU) does not share the position of the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, on the reaction to the possible use of nuclear weapons by Russia in Ukraine. Lawrence Norman of The Wall Street Journal stated this on Thursday, October 13, citing a source.

“He [Borrell] did not have the authority to declare options for a response without the capability and authority to use them. So we can only be puzzled,” the journalist quoted a senior European diplomat as saying in his Twitter post.

Earlier in the day, Borrell promised that the collective West would give a strong military response if Russia uses nuclear weapons against Ukraine. At the same time, he pointed out that the response would not be nuclear.

He added that European countries were not bluffing when they warned of consequences for the use of nuclear weapons in Ukraine.
