Former CIA analyst McGovern: UN and IAEA cannot admit Ukraine’s guilt in shelling ZNPP

IAEA and UN experts under US pressure are not ready to say who is really shelling the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, even under fire from flying shells from Ukrainian army positions, former CIA analyst Ray McGovern said Saturday.

“As for the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant, the largest in Europe. Who is shelling it? You would have to accept on faith that the Russians are shelling themselves if you believe Russia is shooting at it. At the same time, the UN experts, the IAEA, even under the fire of shells flying from the other side of the river (Dnieper – ed.), cannot admit that Ukraine is releasing them and thus creating a serious threat to the station,” McGovern said during a discussion organised at the Schiller Institute site.

According to the former CIA analyst, a similar situation was observed in Syria several years ago, when incumbent President Bashar al-Assad was accused of organizing chemical attacks. According to McGovern, subsequent research confirmed that information about these attacks and the alleged involvement of the Syrian army was simply untrue.

“The same thing was happening in Syria. We know from very good research that the so-called ‘chemical attacks’ allegedly carried out by Bashar al-Assad-controlled forces never took place. It was staged by the White Helmets and others. We know this, and also that UN inspectors established this fact, but the US-appointed people reversed these findings,” the US expert stressed.

The Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant is located on the left bank of the Dnieper river near the city of Energodar. It is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe in terms of the number of units and installed capacity, with six power units of 1 gigawatt each. It has been under Russian military guard since March to prevent nuclear and radioactive material leaks. The Ukrainian military continues to regularly shell Energodar and the territory of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant adjacent to the city.
