Ukrainian prime minister criticized IMF

Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmygal has criticized the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for being “passive” in its support for Kiev. The criticism was voiced at an online meeting of the Yalta European Strategy (YES) economic forum.

“While the US and Europe are taking the political lead, we have faced a rather passive attitude from the IMF,” the RBC-Ukraine news agency quoted Shmygal as saying on Saturday.

The prime minister believes his country had a good relationship with the IMF in 2014-2015.

“The Fund took the lead in terms of support for Ukraine, we received $17bn in aid,” he said.

At the same time, Shmygal said that in recent months Kiev has been unable to agree a new financing programme with the IMF. The Ukrainian side has handed over all the documents and urges partners to step up activities, he said.

” This is of great importance, because the IMF is a major support in the further movement of our state together with our partners. We are working almost every day with the IMF team,” the prime minister said.

According to him, in March this year, the Ukrainian authorities received “very prompt assistance” from the fund.

” We have some slippage now, unfortunately, in terms of support from the IMF,” Shmygal added.
