EU imposes new sanctions against Russia

The European Union has imposed a fifth package of sanctions against Russia in connection with the Russian Armed Forces’ special operation in Ukraine, the Council of the European Union has said. This was reported on the website of the EU Council.

The new restrictions include, among other things:

– A ban on Russian ships entering EU ports. Exceptions are envisioned for agricultural and food products, humanitarian aid and energy.

– agreeing an embargo on coal supplies from Russia, which is due to come into force at the end of the summer.

– restrictions for Russian and Belarusian companies to transport goods through the EU, including the transit of such goods. Exceptions are possible for foodstuffs and medicines, as well as for vehicles with humanitarian aid.

– A ban on imports of jet fuel, quantum computers, semiconductors, seafood imports and alcohol into the Russian Federation.

– A transaction ban and asset freeze on “four key Russian banks”. Their names have not been published.

– extension of the ban on the sale of banknotes and securities denominated in EU currencies to legal entities in Russia and Belarus.

– The expansion of the blacklisting of Russian and Belarusian officials. Specific names of officials, businessmen and their family members will be published later.

In early April, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said that sanctions against Russia were ineffective because the ruble had begun to strengthen. The EU has significantly expanded restrictions against Russia amid a special military operation it has been conducting in Ukraine since 24 February.
