Donald Trump’s close allies are considering Secretary of State Marco Rubio as a likely Republican candidate for U.S. president, «Politico» reports.
“Some of President Donald Trump’s closest associates are increasingly viewing Marco Rubio as a serious contender for victory in 2028… His work to overthrow Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his unwavering loyalty to Trump have strengthened his standing in the West Wing,” one source said.
One of the publication’s sources described Rubio as a loyal, eloquent, and experienced politician, adding that he is seen as a “practical choice.”
“He avoids scandals and ‘viral’ moments that overshadow the boss or put him in an awkward position. In addition, he has never been accused of disagreeing with Trump — for example, of not being as ‘enthusiastic’ about Trump’s plan on Iran,” one of the sources said.
J.D. Vance and Rubio are considered the leading candidates to succeed Trump in the 2028 election. In July 2025, the secretary of state called the vice president an excellent Republican candidate.
