A 75-year-old American millionaire, Ernie Dozzio, was killed during a hunting trip in Gabon after he was attacked by a herd of elephants protecting a calf. The U.S. Embassy in Gabon is coordinating the repatriation of Dozzio’s body to his home state of California.
Dozzio’s companion, a professional hunter, survived but suffered serious injuries. The businessman was armed with a shotgun but did not manage to use it in time.
Elephant attacks are rare and most often occur during sudden encounters in dense vegetation, especially when there are young animals in the herd. Notably, wild elephants are considered the largest land animals on the planet, reaching heights of up to 4 meters.
