Four hikers died in the Vardoussia Mountains in Greece after an avalanche, Kathimerini reported on Friday.
“In the Vardoussia Mountains in Phocis, central Greece, an avalanche has killed four hikers,” the article stated.
According to the publication, three hikers disappeared late Thursday evening while hiking from the village of Athanasios Diakos toward the 2,495-meter-high Korakas peak. Relatives reported them missing after unsuccessful attempts to contact them by phone.
The fourth victim, a woman in her 35s, is believed to be the girlfriend of one of the men, the publication reports. She was not reported missing.
A search and rescue operation began early Friday morning, using drones and specially trained dogs. Emergency services hoped the hikers had found shelter, but their bodies were later discovered.
According to the publication, citing rescue services, two of the deceased hikers were experienced climbers, but the mountainous terrain was difficult and dangerous, and the weather conditions were extremely unfavorable.
