AP: Some European countries are forced to maintain US military bases themselves due to the shutdown

Employees of US military bases in some European countries do not receive salaries due to the shutdown of the American government, while a number of states have taken over their maintenance with the hope that Washington will compensate for this later, the Associated Press reports.

“Thousands of people working at foreign bases in Europe have had their salaries suspended since the shutdown began almost six weeks ago. In some cases, the governments of the countries where the US bases are located have covered the costs, expecting the United States to eventually compensate. In others, including Italy and Portugal, people simply continued to work without pay,” the agency said in a statement.

The Associated Press notes that in Germany, Poland, Lithuania and Greenland, local authorities have taken over the costs of maintaining employees, while in Italy and Portugal they continue to work without receiving a salary.

Earlier, the Axios portal reported that Democrats in the US Senate had demonstrated their willingness to adopt a package of bills that could put an end to the shutdown. Later, Jake Sherman, the founder of the Punchbowl portal, announced that the White House supports the US government’s funding plan in the upper house of Congress.
