In the UK, the number of asylum applications filed in 2024 exceeded 108,000, which was a record. This was reported on November 4 by The Times newspaper with reference to the report of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).
It is specified that in 2024 there were 28% more requests than in 2023 (84 thousand). The last record was set in 2002: 103 thousand requests were made then.
In addition, according to the OECD, 44,000 illegal attempts were made to enter the country last year. The publication added that 10,000 illegal migrants from Pakistan, as well as 8,000 from Afghanistan and Iran, arrived in the UK.
The Financial Times (FT) newspaper learned on September 20 about the plans of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer to introduce digital identity cards in the country. This, as explained in the publication, according to Starmer, would have a positive impact on reducing illegal migration. The certificate was supposed to be issued to every person who has the legal right to live in the UK.
