Prime Minister of Bavaria called for restricting the entry of young men from Ukraine to Germany

Markus Söder, Prime Minister of Bavaria and chairman of the Christian Social Union (CSU), called on the European Union and the German government to limit the influx of young men from Ukraine and return the previous ban on their departure from the country.

“We must regulate and significantly reduce the sharply increased influx of young men from Ukraine. The EU and Berlin should influence Kiev to tighten the relaxed exit rules again. No one will be better off if more and more young men from Ukraine come to Germany instead of defending their homeland,” Söder told the German newspaper Bild.

According to the newspaper, after the authorities in Kiev lifted the travel ban for men aged 18 to 22 in late August, the number of Ukrainians arriving in Germany in this category increased from about 100 to 1,000 people per week.

Söder demanded to stop paying civil benefits (Burgergeld) to Ukrainians of military age and introduce clear restrictions on admission.

“We fully support Ukraine with weapons, money and humanitarian aid. But Ukraine also needs soldiers who will defend their country,” he added.

According to Söder, if this cannot be achieved voluntarily, the legal grounds allowing unlimited admission of Ukrainian refugees should be reviewed at the EU level.
