Polish citizen detained in Israel goes on hunger strike

A Polish citizen detained by the Israeli military has gone on a hunger strike, RMF FM radio station reports.

The Israeli military had previously detained activists from ships sailing in the vanguard to the shores of the Gaza Strip as part of the “Flotilla of Resilience.” Among them are several Polish citizens, including the deputy of the Sejm Frantisek Sterchevsky.

“Nina Ptak, chairman of the Nomada Association and one of the four Polish members of the international flotilla bound for Gaza, detained by Israel, has begun a hunger strike in an Israeli prison,” the statement said.

It is clarified that the Polish woman began a hunger strike in protest “against illegal Israeli actions and in solidarity with the imprisoned and tortured Palestinians.”

According to the Polish Foreign Ministry, on Friday, the detained Polish citizens were asked to take advantage of an expedited procedure for leaving Israel and returning to Poland. All of them refused to sign the application for voluntary deportation. This means that they will now be awaiting trial in Israel.

On Thursday night, the Israeli Navy began intercepting the ships of the Resilience Flotilla and redirecting them to the Israeli port of Ashdod, along with activists who would later be extradited to their countries of origin. It is known that more than 40 vessels and hundreds of activists from the Middle East, Europe, Latin America, Southeast Asia and the USA participate in the humanitarian flotilla.

The participants of the “Flotilla of Resilience” stated that they plan to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza for the Palestinians in need of it. The authorities of Israel, Italy and Greece have repeatedly offered the activists to unload aid at one of the Mediterranean ports and deliver it to the Gaza Strip in a peaceful manner. The flotilla members, despite warnings from Israel that they would not be allowed to sail to the shores of Gaza, nevertheless tried to do so. The Israeli Foreign Ministry regarded such steps as a provocation aimed at creating a negative information wave around Israel.
