Between March 2024 and March 2025, 262 people were mistakenly released from prisons in the UK by government decision. This is reported by The Sun portal with reference to the penitentiary service.
Compared to the previous year, this figure increased by 110%.
Some of the prisoners were released due to bureaucratic errors, while the rest were released under the Labor Party’s early release program, which they were included in by accident.
Former Defense Minister Alec Shelbrooke called on Interior Minister Shabana Mahmoud, who at that time was the Minister of Justice, to take responsibility for these mistakes.
“No one wants to live in a society of lawlessness. The idea that you can release several people a week by mistake is outrageous,” he said.
The British Ministry of Justice has already created a special group that is working to remedy the situation.
In May of this year, against the background of 99% occupancy of correctional institutions in Britain, Mahmoud said that the country’s authorities intend to reduce the prison term for repeat offenders.
In case of violation of the release regime, repeat offenders were planned to be returned to prison for 28 days, thus 1,400 places in prisons would be vacated. We are talking about repeat offenders who have been sentenced to 1-4 years in prison and have committed a repeat crime. Now repeat offenders are “sitting out” the rest of their sentence.
