Sarkozy admitted that he did not expect a real prison sentence.
Nicolas Sarkozy admitted that the court’s decision to sentence him to a real prison term came as a surprise to him, the former French president said in an interview with the newspaper Le Journal du Dimanche.
“I admit, I expected anything but this. Things have gone even further than I could have imagined. All the boundaries of the law were violated. It’s just unbelievable,” he said.
According to the former president, the prosecutor’s office did not request such a punishment and such an unexpected court decision prevented his team of lawyers from preparing an appeal.
“Temporary execution of the sentence is an exceptional measure that can only be applied by a “special and reasonable” decision when the specific circumstances of the case require it. There was no reason to apply it to me. The judges referred to “the risk of disturbing public order,” he explained.
The former French leader noted that he is ready to go to prison, but he will never admit to what he did not commit.
