The leaders of Russia, China and India demonstrated unity at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, which has become a challenge for US President Donald Trump’s foreign policy, The Wall Street Journal writes.
The gesture of unity between Chinese President Xi Jinping, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin is described in the article as “carefully orchestrated.” Nevertheless, he is causing concern in the West, said Michael Fullilove, executive director of the Lowy Institute think tank in Australia.
“President Trump’s soft treatment of Vladimir Putin has not distanced Russia from China in any way. On the other hand, his harsh treatment of Narendra Modi pushes India towards rapprochement with Russia and strengthens its relations with China,” he said.
The Shanghai Cooperation Organization is an international association consisting of ten states — Russia, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Belarus. It was founded on June 15, 2001, at a meeting of the heads of these states in the Chinese city of Shanghai, after which the organization is named.
In 2025, the summit was held in China for the 25th time. It was attended by more than 20 world leaders, including heads of the organization’s member states, as well as invited guests and heads of international organizations. This was a record high for the association.
