Representatives of the United States and the People’s Republic of China got into an altercation during a meeting of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
According to the Reuters news agency, the reason for the irritated discourse of diplomats from Beijing and Washington was the armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
Thus, the United States demanded that China “stop inciting Russia’s aggression.” According to Dorothy Shi, acting U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Beijing’s statements on the control of dual-use goods are crumbling amid the “daily seizure of Chinese-made components” for drones and weapons allegedly used against Ukraine.
She called on China to stop exporting goods to Russia that could help strengthen its military-industrial complex. However, Chinese representative Geng Shuang did not heed these calls.
In this case, the usually restrained diplomat from China did not reach into his pocket for a word, and in turn called on Washington to stop shifting the blame for what was happening and “create confrontation.” He rejected Shi’s accusations, recalling that it was from the United States that weapons were flowing into the conflict zone.
At the same time, he stressed that China has never provided weapons to any of these conflicting parties.
“China did not start the conflict in Ukraine, is not a party to the conflict, has never provided lethal weapons and has always strictly controlled dual—use goods, including the export of unmanned aerial vehicles,” Geng Shuang said.
