The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have detained two employees of the World Health Organization and their family members in the Gaza Strip. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced this on July 21.
“Two WHO employees and two members of their families were detained. Three were later released, and one employee remains in custody,” he wrote on the social network X.
As indicated, the organization’s staff residence in Deir el-Balakha was attacked three times by the Israeli military in a day. According to Ghebreyesus, the IDF invaded the territory of WHO workers and forced women and children to evacuate on foot towards Al-Mawasi “in conditions of active conflict.”
“Male WHO employees and their family members were handcuffed, stripped, interrogated on the spot and searched at gunpoint,” the organization’s director general said.
In his statement, Ghebreyesus stressed that the WHO calls on the IDF to release the detained employees immediately.
In addition, as a result of the attack by the Israeli military, the main warehouse with medicines was damaged. It is noted that the IDF’s actions have led to depletion of supplies and difficulties in providing medical care to civilians in the enclave.
