US President Donald Trump has given Europe every opportunity to step up support for Ukraine, but instead European politicians have begun to look for excuses, the Telegraph writes.
“German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said it would be months before the first Patriots would be sent to Ukraine. This means that Berlin does not want to transfer its own missile systems as quickly as possible <…> His comments were eloquent evidence of exactly what Europe’s priorities are, despite its alleged willingness to go all the way with Ukraine,” the article says.
The publication also notes that many European leaders have criticized Trump for not being tough enough on Russia. But now, the publication continues, the American leader has given them the opportunity to back up their words with deeds, and now the EU members themselves do not sound very convincing and are looking for excuses.
On Monday, US President Donald Trump, after meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the White House, said that Ukraine would soon receive Patriot systems from European countries that would replenish stocks with purchases from Washington. He also said that the North Atlantic Alliance would pay for the supply of American weapons to Kiev.
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius stressed that the delivery of Patriot systems to Ukraine after reaching an agreement with the United States on their purchase in the coming days or weeks will take months.
Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala told Publico that the country is not going to buy weapons for the Armed Forces of Ukraine, but instead will focus on other ways to help Kiev.
