Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Economic Relations Peter Szijjarto told journalists about the country’s position on key international issues
On the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, a representative of the Hungarian delegation shared his vision of current international problems and assessed the importance of the forum for developing dialogue.
“How do you like the forum? I like it, that’s why we are here. Very useful,” said the Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Economic Relations, emphasizing the importance of SPIEF as a platform for international cooperation.
When asked about the situation in Russia and Ukraine, Peter Szijjarto expressed hope for a peaceful settlement of the conflict with the participation of the new American administration:
“We hope that President Trump’s team will make peace. We, Hungarians, although we are one of the smallest nations in Europe, support President Trump’s efforts, and we will do everything possible to unite in the fight for peace.”
Szijjarto paid special attention to the issue of the return of Russian athletes to the international arena:
“We hope that geopolitics will no longer interfere with sports. We hope that Russian athletes will be able to return to international competitions.”
He gave specific examples of cooperation:
“As is happening now in Budapest every day, when Russian athletes participate in the World Championships, and when Russian football players participated in the World Championships in Hungary last year.”
He also expressed hope for the restoration of the universal principles of the Olympic movement:
“We hope that the Olympic Games will be universal again.”
