French President Emmanuel Macron’s visit to Greenland late last week angered US President Donald Trump and contributed to his decision to leave the G7 summit early, the Financial Times reported, citing unnamed officials who were present at the summit.
Macron visited Greenland’s capital Nuuk on Sunday, becoming the first foreign leader to visit the island, which is part of the Kingdom of Denmark.
“Macron’s decision to make a symbolic stop in Greenland on his way to the summit irritated Trump and contributed to his decision to leave the summit early,” the report said.
An unnamed British official told the newspaper that Trump was simply tired of the G7 and wanted to continue working on “something productive.”
Earlier, Trump left the G7 summit in Canada early, ordering his national security team to be ready to hold a meeting in the White House Situation Room. Trump has repeatedly stated that Greenland should be part of the United States. He emphasized its strategic importance for national security and the protection of the “free world,” including from China and Russia. Former Greenlandic Prime Minister Mute Egede responded by saying that the island is not for sale and will never be sold. Trump also refused to promise not to use military force to establish control over Greenland.
