Netanyahu: Operation against Iran will last “as long as necessary”

Israel’s operation against Iran will last “as long as necessary,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, according to Ynet. He said the goal of the operation is “to damage Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, Iranian ballistic missile factories, and Iran’s military capabilities.”

“This operation will continue for as long as necessary until we accomplish our mission — to repel the threat of destruction hanging over our heads. Iran still has significant capabilities to harm us, and we are prepared for that as well,” the publication quotes Netanyahu as saying.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) earlier announced a “preemptive” strike against “Iran’s nuclear program.” The statement said that “dozens of Air Force planes completed the first phase, which included strikes on dozens of military targets, including nuclear facilities in various parts of Iran.”

The Times of Israel, citing the IDF statement, wrote that the operation was named “People of Lions” (one of the possible translations).

A state of emergency has been declared in Israel, with gatherings, schooling, and work at enterprises prohibited. Defense Minister Israel Katz explained the measure as a possible response to a counterattack by Iran.
