A new artillery manufacturing plant has opened in the English city of Sheffield amid increased demand for weapons, according to the UK Ministry of Defense.
The plant, operated by BAE Systems, will produce the 155mm M777 light howitzer.
“In the future, the enterprise will develop to create and produce a range of world-class advanced combat systems,” the statement said.
According to the Telegraph newspaper, the company has reversed its 2023 decision to phase out production of M777 howitzers in the UK due to growing demand. According to the publication, Ukraine previously received several M777 howitzers, which are capable of hitting targets at a distance of up to 30 kilometers and are relatively light for artillery pieces, weighing 4.5 tons. However, many of these guns are in need of repair or restoration.
