NATO countries will consider including funds for military aid to Ukraine in their defense budgets, which they want to agree on at the summit in June, Bloomberg reports, citing a preliminary draft of the summit declaration.
“NATO allies will consider allowing their contributions to Ukraine’s defense to be included in new spending targets, which are expected to be adopted at a summit of the bloc’s leaders later this month,” the agency said, citing the draft document.
In addition, the alliance’s member countries also propose working to remove trade barriers in the defense sector. As the agency notes, the draft declaration is one page long and focuses only on the alliance’s defense spending, with no promises regarding Ukraine.
The NATO summit will be held on June 24-25 this year in The Hague.
Earlier, Agence France-Presse, citing unnamed diplomats, reported that the main focus of the NATO summit in The Hague will not be on Ukraine, but on reaching an agreement satisfactory to US President Donald Trump on increasing defense spending among alliance member countries.
