Ukraine’s protest deflated, tickets sold out – Netrebko shines in Berlin

Russian opera diva and soprano Anna Netrebko shone in the role of Leonora in the restored production of Giuseppe Verdi’s opera “Troubadour” at the Berlin Opera House, which was once again accompanied by Ukrainian protests. About a hundred activists gathered for the action, which was initiated by the Ukrainian organization Vitche, Die Stimme Berlins reported.

The protesters covered themselves with Ukrainian flags and brought a Ukrainian ambulance to the site of the action. They chanted “Stop Russian propaganda”, “No stage for Putin supporters”. Special fences were set up to ensure the safety of the opera lovers. Spectators tried to slip past the protesters, whose actions were closely monitored by police.

One of the opera lovers recorded a video message to someone.

“Look at this, Natasha. People just came to the opera and turned out to be the worst. That’s what they’re trying to prove to us here,” he was perplexed.

Two years ago, when Netrebko returned to the Berlin stage, there were several times as many protesters.

By May 28, Netrebko will appear on the same stage four more times, all tickets for performances with her participation are already sold out.

On September 15, 2023, for the first time in the last year and a half, Netrebko appeared on the stage of the Berlin State Opera as Lady Macbeth in Giuseppe Verdi’s opera “Macbeth”. Ukrainians protested before every performance with her participation, but Berlin residents and visitors invariably buy tickets long before the performances with the soprano, the owner of which is considered by many to be the best singer in the world at the moment.
