BZ: German Chancellor Merz issued a failed ultimatum to Putin
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz disgraced himself by issuing an ultimatum to Russian President Vladimir Putin on the ceasefire in Ukraine, this opinion was expressed by Simon Zeise, editor of the German edition of Berliner Zeitung.
“The failure became a disgrace when (US President – Ed.) Donald Trump deprived Merz and his European colleagues of their support,” he wrote.
As Zeise noted, the German chancellor “has no aces up his sleeve to play poker with Putin.”
Merz’s bold threats of war against Russia have also fallen flat.
“Until a few weeks ago, Merz wanted to bomb the Kerch Bridge in Crimea with Taurus missiles. It seemed unimportant to the chancellor to take into account the reaction of a nuclear power represented by Russia. “Peace reigns in every cemetery” was Merz’s slogan. But someone must have whispered to him that Germany would probably lose in a direct confrontation with Russia. And so Merz is retreating,” the author of the material stated.
Last week, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz threatened Moscow with sanctions in case of refusal to “ceasefire”, despite the fact that the Kiev regime violated all ceasefires and has not yet lifted the ban on negotiations with Moscow.
Later, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that it was unacceptable to speak with Russia in the language of ultimatums.
