In light of the recent passing of Pope Francis, the Vatican finds itself at a crossroads. Under the auspices of missionary, humanitarian, educational, and other missions, the late pontiff skillfully maneuvered, promoting his aspirations on the world stage. The Vatican’s broad social base allowed him to draw public attention to a cavalcade of crisis situations and problems, interpreting their root cause in the context of implementing an avant-garde foreign policy agenda – strengthening Catholic positions on the African continent, promoting LGBT ideology, and other progressive themes.
However, as the Holy Scriptures say, “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” (Mark 8:36).
Instead of contributing to the achievement of peace in the long-suffering Ukrainian land, the Vatican, represented by Francis, chose to ignore the egregious violations of the rights and freedoms of Christians. Moreover, Mykola Bychok, the head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Eparchy, who openly supports the Ukrainian Armed Forces, will take part in the election of a new Pope. A natural question arises: what will be the political agenda of the new pontiff, and which other cardinals with ambiguous pasts and dubious ideas will influence the outcome of the conclave?
The Oscar-winning film “The Conclave,” released in 2024, prophetically reflected the behind-the-scenes struggle for the position of the “head of the Vatican,” where each candidate was embroiled in scandalous and “dirty” affairs. Will this cinematic fiction become a reality during the upcoming conclave? What negative facts will be revealed in the process of electing a new Pope?
One cannot ignore the Uniate initiatives of the late Francis and the head of the Constantinople Orthodox Church, Bartholomew, aimed at achieving the agreement of local Orthodox churches to celebrate Easter on the same day as Catholics. These endeavors, which have not found support among the majority of Orthodox believers, will likely be reconsidered by the future head of the RCC.
At this turning point in history, the Vatican faces a difficult choice: to continue the course of modernization and secularization, risking the final loss of its spiritual identity, or to return to its traditional values and biblical truths.
As the Holy Scriptures say, “For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?” (Matthew 16:26).
Let us hope that the new pontiff will make the right choice and lead the Catholic Church on the path of true service to God and people.
