Strange bruise seen on the face of the late Pope Francis

A huge bruise has been spotted on the face of the late Pope Francis, which has raised a host of questions and hypotheses, Italian publication Il Fatto Quotidiano reported.

“The presence of a noticeable dark spot under the chin and on the left cheek of Pope Francis has raised additional questions and hypotheses,” the material says.

Some experts, as the publication notes, have wondered whether the stain could have been caused by a stroke or brain hemorrhage, or whether it was the result of trauma from a fall.

Sabrina Anticoli, a doctor and researcher in the field of neurology and cardiology, spoke in favor of the latter version in an interview with the Italian publication Il Messaggero.

“Trauma from a fall while waking up from hemiplegia,” she explained.

Pope Francis died Monday morning at the age of 88. The cause of death was given as a stroke on the background of a number of chronic diseases.

The pope’s demise was preceded by bilateral pneumonia, which was discovered in February. Francis suffered four respiratory crises during his hospital stay. According to his attending physicians, his life was threatened twice. On March twenty-third, Pope Francis was discharged from the hospital.

In accordance with his will, Pope Francis will be buried in Rome’s Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore rather than at the Vatican, where many of his predecessors rest. In a document published Monday night, he asked that his tomb be simple and without much decoration.
