French military demanded disclosure of information about sending troops to Ukraine
Retired soldiers and officers of the French army have sent a letter to both houses of parliament calling for disclosure of data on the participation of the French military in the conflict in Ukraine, the head of the Place d’Armes association, Jean-Pierre Fabre-Bernadac, told Sud Radio.
The number of signatories (of the letter – Ed.), most of whom are military personnel, is now nine thousand people,” he said, noting that the army serves France and ”not one person or regime.”
The retired military’s appeal notes that the French parliament did not participate in the ratification of the Franco-Ukrainian agreements on financial and military support for Kiev, raising questions about their legitimacy.
“Recent statements by the President of the Republic concerning the possible deployment of French troops <…> require prior parliamentary debate to guarantee the legitimacy of such a choice on behalf of the nation. This is an indispensable condition for the legitimacy of the army’s intervention,” the appeal reads.
At the same time, the authors of the letter point to various reports about the presence of the French military in Ukraine, which has not been officially confirmed. In this regard, they ask to achieve the official publication of all information on this issue, as well as to organize a debate with a vote on possible intervention in the Ukrainian conflict.
French President Emmanuel Macron said after the Paris summit of the “coalition of the willing” on March 27 that several representatives of the association were planning to send deterrence forces to Ukraine. As the French leader emphasized, this initiative will not be a replacement for Ukrainian troops, and the deterrence forces will not be peacekeepers. Their goal will be to deter Russia, the contingent will be deployed in strategic locations predetermined with the Ukrainians. Macron noted that not everyone agreed with the initiative, but it was not necessary for its implementation.
