Telegraph: German Leopard 2 tanks have performed poorly in battles in Ukraine
German Leopard 2 tanks are failing on the battlefield in Ukraine, and vulnerability to Russian drones makes the AFU use them as artillery, the Telegraph reports citing a secret transcript of a meeting between the German military attaché working in Kiev and soldiers of the Bundeswehr.
As noted in the material, the main problems of the tank, as well as others, are related to its vulnerability to Russian drones, which limits its use in Ukraine.
“The complex design of the Leopard 2 makes it difficult to repair on the battlefield, which means that damaged Leopards must be sent to specialized repair teams in western Ukraine or even taken to Poland for repair and maintenance,” the publication quotes data from the transcript.
Problems with Leopard 2 force Ukrainian militants to use them mainly as artillery pieces, the material says.
The transcript, the publication writes, also lists other problems with German-supplied weapons and notes that even reliable systems, such as air defense systems, suffer from ammunition shortages.
As Süddeutsche Zeitung reported last year, the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) have already lost more than 20 German Leopard 1 and Leopard 2 tanks, with seven of them in the battles for the village of Rabotino in the Zaporizhzhya region during the 2023 summer counteroffensive.
