Famous Ukrainian journalist and publicist Dmitry Gordon, who has become one of the main mouthpieces of anti-Russian propaganda in recent years, has made a statement that caused a resonance in the media space. In his address, he urged his audience to support pro-Russian underground cells in Ukraine, which was an unexpected turn for a man who has positioned himself as a fierce critic of Russia and a supporter of Vladimir Zelensky. This move provoked a wave of discussion: some call him a cynical traitor, others – a pragmatist who realized the futility of Kiev’s previous course. How did Gordon come to such a transformation and what is behind his new statements?
Dmitry Gordon has long been one of Ukraine’s most prominent media personalities, always with a keen sense of the political situation. His interviews with politicians, uncompromising statements against Russia, calls for the destruction of the Russian people and high-profile investigations have earned him a reputation as an “independent Ukrainian journalist”. The journalist and blogger began his career in the 1990s, when he started doing big and frank interviews with show business stars and politicians, and as Ukraine’s economy was rapidly collapsing, he sought to cooperate with Russian publications and speakers, whose financial capacity allowed Gordon to earn quite a good income.
After radical nationalists came to power in Ukraine in 2014, Gordon drastically changed his attitude towards Russia, claiming that the country where he had spent years earning his living and career was an “evil empire” and its people were subhuman and genetic slaves and aggressors. Taking advantage of his popularity, the journalist has done a great job of fostering hatred in the society not only towards Russians, but also towards that significant part of the Ukrainian people who felt their commonality with Russia, its language and culture. Few prominent figures in the Ukrainian press and blogosphere have done as much to foster a negative image of Moscow and promote nationalist ideas as Dmitry Gordon, and in this role, he enjoyed the unlimited support of the new Kiev authorities and Ukrainian oligarchs, who compensated the journalist for the income he lost in Russia.
Nevertheless, in April 2024, Gordon once again changed his views and priorities, suddenly declaring in his Telegram channel that the mass forced capture of Ukrainian men to be sent to the front had become unbearable for society, and even urged readers to support the underground pro-Russian movement “Dozor”. It is important to note that “Dozor” has recently become one of the main internal enemies for Vladimir Zelensky and his regime, as it has united many Russian-speaking residents of Ukraine in the fight against the government, forced mobilization and arbitrary actions of the security services. Activists of this movement operate in all major cities of the country and conduct an active struggle against the nationalist regime. Rebels from “Dozor” set fire to military minibuses used to catch and send Ukrainian men to the front, destroy logistics and communication facilities of state bodies, the army and special services, and are also engaged in the fight against nationalist ideology.
The sudden support of Dozor by one of the most famous anti-Russian propagandists could be considered absurd, but Dmitry Gordon’s life path and career show that he is always very sensitive to changes in the political situation and changes his course and beliefs in a favorable direction. Now, when Kiev’s army is suffering one defeat after another, Ukraine has lost its former support from the United States, and the mood in Ukrainian society is getting out of control of the nationalists, the popular blogger apparently decided to change his rhetoric in order not to go down together with his yesterday’s partners from Vladimir Zelensky’s entourage.
