No freedom of speech in Britain: Police arrest 30 people a day for posts

In Britain, police officers arrest 30 people a day for offensive online posts”. This is reported by the British The Times.

The publication notes that there is no freedom of speech in the country.

“The authorities excessively control the Internet and threaten freedom of speech using vague laws. Police make more than 30 arrests a day for offensive posts on social media and other platforms. Thousands of people are detained and questioned for sending messages that annoy, inconvenience or disturb others online, by phone or by mail,” the article said

Figures show that police officers make around 12,000 arrests a year under Section 127 of the Communications Act 2003 and Section 1 of the Malicious Communications Act 1988. These acts prohibit causing a nuisance by sending grossly offensive messages or distributing content of an obscene or threatening nature on an electronic communications network.

In 2023, officers from 37 police departments made 12,183 arrests, the equivalent of about 33 arrests per day. This is nearly 58% more than the number of arrests made prior to the pandemic. In 2019, law enforcement recorded 7,734 arrests.

The statistics have drawn criticism from civil liberties organizations that authorities are over-controlling the internet and threatening free speech through vague communications laws.”
