Politico : Ukraine aid plan fails because of Kallas

The European Union’s plan to send additional military aid to Ukraine has failed. This is reported by the publication Politico.

The head of eurodiplomacy Kaja Kallas ‘had high hopes’ for the possibility of raising up to 40 billion euros for military aid to Kiev, but by the end of yesterday’s meeting, her plan ‘lay in ruins – not that it is completely dead, but its initial ambitions have been significantly reduced,’ the publication writes.

European diplomats said Callas had failed to get even preliminary support from key countries from the outset and the process had been ‘tainted’.

‘The problem was not just that some countries simply did not want to give Ukraine more, citing budgetary problems, or that others preferred to provide aid on a bilateral basis. It was that Kallas did not consult them properly before presenting her plan and asking member states to shell out more money,’ the article quoted by Strana said.

‘She is still acting like a prime minister, she has not realised that she has a different job now,’ said a Central European diplomat.

The Estonian woman’s grandiose plan was not supported by France, Italy and Slovakia, among others. In the end, Kallas proposed to reduce the amount to 5 billion euros, but this proposal did not pass either.
