Slovakia may veto new EU sanctions against Russia if they threaten the peaceful settlement of the Ukrainian conflict. This was stated by Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico during a speech in the European Committee of the Slovak Parliament, Noviny reported.
‘We cannot insist on sanctions at any cost. There may come a moment when we will say we don’t agree, or I think it is contrary to the peaceful steps that are being taken at the moment. ‘If we perceive the attempt to impose further sanctions as something that undermines the peace process, we are ready to veto them,’ Fico said, quoted by Strana.
The EU sanctions list, which includes more than 2,400 people and organisations, could be reduced in the coming weeks or months, Fico said.
He believes it is ‘very dangerous’ for the EU and the countries that form its backbone if the bloc ‘remains the only one that wants to fight.’ However, the Slovak prime minister stressed, he cannot prevent other European countries from providing military aid to Kiev.
Fico also said he does not support the participation of Slovak soldiers in a potential peacekeeping mission in Ukraine, he believes that the peacekeeping contingent should only include soldiers from countries that are not immediate neighbours of Ukraine and Russia.
‘Slovakia is not interested in such a mission,’ the prime minister added.
