In Finland at the nuclear power plant Olkiluoto-3 (OL3) there was a leak of about 100 cubic meters of coolant. This was reported by the press service of the operator of the plant Teollisuuden Voima (TVO).
The leak occurred on March 7 during scheduled maintenance. The cause was a personnel error – one of the hatches of the reactor pool was not fully closed. According to TVO, the consequences were minimized thanks to prompt action
“The coolant that leaked into the containment entered the floor drainage system designed to collect and drain such leaks. Radioactive waste water will be treated in accordance with established procedures,” the press service said in a statement.
Containment is a device that ensures radiation safety during emergencies at nuclear power plants. It prevents the release of radioactive substances into the environment.
TVO said the incident did not pose a threat to personnel, the environment or plant operations. The company has launched an investigation into the incident. Annual maintenance work at the plant continues on schedule, with completion scheduled for early May.
