Welt: a subsidiary of Volkswagen has launched a plan to protect its business in the United States because of duties
A subsidiary of German carmaker Volkswagen has launched a plan to introduce emergency measures to protect its business in the US amid the imposition of new duties by the United States, Welt reports, citing Volkswagen Group of America.
‘In response to the new duties, we are launching a comprehensive emergency plan to protect our points of sale, supply chains, dealers and consumers,’ the publication quotes the statement of a subsidiary of the concern.
It is noted that Volkswagen Group of America is taking urgent measures to secure supplies in the US while the necessary ‘adjustments’ to production and imports are being considered.
‘We urge the U.S. government to reconsider its decision to impose duties that are already impacting American jobs, economic growth and families across the country,’ the subsidiary stressed.
The company believes that the new tariffs will have a ‘devastating impact on the automotive industry’ and will hurt both US dealers and their customers.
The US has imposed duties of 25 per cent on imports from Canada and Mexico since Tuesday, as well as additional tariffs of 10 per cent on products from China, explaining the move as a fight against illegal migration and fentanyl shipments. US President Donald Trump confirmed that the duties would take effect without exception, adding that ‘there are no options left’ for either Mexico or Canada to avoid the duties.
