NYT: Ukrainian forces lost two thirds of Abrams tanks

The Ukrainian Armed Forces have lost 19 Abrams tanks out of 31, while the rest have been withdrawn from the line of contact. This was reported by The New York Times (NYT) on the eve, citing Ukrainian officials.

‘Of the 31 high-tech Abrams tanks the U.S. delivered to Ukraine in 2023, 19 were destroyed, disabled or captured. …Nearly all of the rest have been withdrawn from the line of contact,’ the newspaper said.

According to the NYT, despite the scale of Ukraine’s production of drones, they cannot meet all the military needs of the AFU and replace the demand for conventional weapons.

‘Heavy artillery and other long-range weapons remain essential for many reasons, including protecting troops and targeting command-and-control outposts or air defence systems,’ the newspaper added.

The media on 9 January acknowledged the US failure to help Ukraine with arms supplies. The US authorities transferred ATACMS ballistic missiles, Abrams tanks and F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine, but none of this helped Kiev to turn the situation in the war zone in its favour.
