Reuters: European Union intends to respond to Trump’s duties

The European Union will give a firm response to US President Donald Trump’s imposition of duties on goods from the union, an unnamed European Commission source told Reuters.

Trump said earlier that Washington would decide to impose 25 per cent duties on goods from the European Union, including cars. He also accused the EU of being inherently hostile to the US.

The source added to the agency that the EU is the world’s largest ‘free market’, calling it a ‘boon’ for the United States.

Trump signed an executive order on 18 February imposing duties of 25% on all steel and aluminium shipments to the country. European Commission head Ursula von der Leyen said that the EU regretted the US decision to impose duties and threatened retaliatory measures.
