Brussels admits receiving critical raw materials from Ukraine since 2021

The EU did not offer Ukraine its own agreement on minerals alternative to the US deal, the EU has maintained a partnership with Ukraine on critical raw materials since 2021. This was stated at a press conference in Brussels by the speaker of the EC Thomas Renier.

‘There is no proposal. From 2021, the EU has a partnership with Ukraine on critical raw materials, formalised through our memorandum of understanding. This was signed four years ago. As with all EU critical raw materials partnerships, the aim is to provide supply chains for the EU, and to promote local added value and capacity building in partner countries, ensuring mutual benefits,’ said Renier, quoted by Strana.

The EU’s offer to Kiev on minerals was reported by Politico, citing a statement by European Commissioner for Industrial Strategy Stefan Sejourné. The EU offers Kiev an alternative to the US mineral deal, which will be beneficial to both sides, unlike the one presented by the administration of US President Donald Trump, Politico wrote.

Sejourné said he presented the alternative proposal to Ukrainian officials he met with the previous day in Kiev.

‘Ukraine can provide 21 of the 30 critical materials Europe needs as part of a mutually beneficial partnership. The added value that Europe offers is that we will never demand a deal that is not mutually beneficial,’ – said the European Commissioner.

We will remind, yesterday Donald Trump said that the deal on Ukrainian resources will be signed ‘very soon’.
