Merz called Europe’s independence from Trump his priority

Friedrich Merz, candidate for chancellor of Germany from the Christian Democratic Union (CDU/CSU), said on 23 February that the administration of US President Donald Trump is indifferent to the fate of Europe. He also noted that his priority is the independence of Europe from the United States.

‘For me, the absolute priority will be the gradual strengthening of Europe so that we can achieve independence from the United States,’ the Handelsblatt newspaper quoted the CDU/CSU leader as saying.

According to the politician, the Trump administration is ‘largely indifferent’ to the fate of Europe. In addition, he said that at the moment the European heads have no understanding of what position the US President will take in the near future on Ukraine. For this reason, it is important in the FRG to form a new government as soon as possible, Merz said.

On the same day, he said that his party had won the election on 23 February, noting that it was now necessary to create a workable coalition as soon as possible.
