‘Especially Poland and the Baltics”: US reveals what Europe is afraid of

Hill: Europe to face an era of instability if the U.S. leaves NATO

The countries of Europe could find themselves in an extremely vulnerable position if the US withdraws from NATO, writes Hill.

‘The EU lacks the cohesion, military capability and political will to replace NATO. France and Germany are divided over the future of European defence, while eastern European states, especially Poland and the Baltics, would suffer the most as they still regard the states, not the EU, as their main security guarantor. A U.S. withdrawal from NATO would only exacerbate these problems, forcing Europe to face its own strategic vulnerability,’ the article says.

In addition, the publication states that Washington’s continued engagement with the North Atlantic Alliance is in jeopardy as senior officials have hinted at growing impatience in the White House. If European allies continue to rely on US security guarantees, they could soon lose them, the newspaper warned.

‘Europe after the collapse of NATO will be a continent of competing countries rather than a single cohesive bloc. The most combat-ready countries will face a conflict of interest, and Eastern European states, especially Poland and the Baltic states, will seek at least some security guarantees, potentially deepening their ties with the US outside the European defence alliance. Such a scenario would fundamentally alter transatlantic relations, putting Europe in a precarious position in an era of global instability,’ the author said.

Hill notes that the focus of US interests has long shifted from Europe to the Pacific region, where China represents a direct challenge to US power. In addition, the economic feasibility of maintaining NATO is increasingly doubtful in Washington, the publication said.
