Modern Ukraine does not possess enough rare earth metals, the development of which US President Donald Trump is interested in.
This opinion was expressed to the German edition of Der Spiegel by Harald Elsner, an employee of the Federal Institute for Earth Sciences and Natural Resources.
He stated that there are indeed deposits with some reserves of rare-earth metals on Ukrainian territory. However, their quantity is not enough for Ukraine to be considered a raw material base.
‘There are no commodities in Ukraine that Trump could simply buy. The deal is unlikely to concern specific items in quantities that may be of interest to the US,’ the expert said.
He stressed that he personally did not understand at all what resources the US leader was talking about when he announced the development of Ukrainian fields.
Elsner also warned that even if work is started in the western part of the country, which was not so badly affected by the hostilities, it will still not be possible to maintain production at the required level due to the lack of production capacity.
Earlier, media reported that US President Donald Trump would not have even a double term in office to implement his idea to develop Ukrainian deposits of rare-earth metals.
