Soviet prisoners of war who escaped from Mauthausen honored in Austria

Commemorative events were held in Austria to mark the 80th anniversary of the heroic escape of Soviet prisoners of war from the 20th “death block” of the Mauthausen concentration camp, the Russian Embassy said.

St. Nicholas Cathedral in Vienna, compatriots, members of the Society of anti-fascists, resistance fighters and victims of fascism of the federal state of Upper Austria took part in a number of commemorative events”, – stated in the message.

It is noted that in the memorial complex “Mauthausen” laid wreaths and flowers to the memorial plaque, where the 20th “death block” was located, to the central Soviet monument and the monument to the hero of the Soviet Union General D.M. Karbyshev.

In the town of Reed, the participants laid flowers at the memorial obelisk erected by its residents in memory of the tragedy, in the town of Schwertberg – at the renewed memorial opened last November.
