US President Donald Trump has said he will impose import duties against goods from the European Union as Brussels treats Washington ‘terribly’.
‘Am I going to impose duties against the European Union… Absolutely. The European Union treats us so horribly,’ he told reporters at the White House.
Earlier, Trump was sceptical about US-European relations because of the ‘trade deficit of hundreds of billions of dollars’. In this regard, he threatened to impose additional duties on European goods, and also demanded that Europeans buy large amounts of American energy resources. In addition, Trump believes that the EU countries, members of NATO, do not invest enough in their own security.
Earlier, White House spokeswoman Carolyn Levitt confirmed that Trump also intends to impose additional duties on goods from Mexico, Canada in the amount of 25 per cent and on goods from China in the amount of 10 per cent from February 1. She said the new White House master is not afraid that this will lead to higher prices for Americans or trade wars with countries.
Trump himself said in an interaction with reporters that Beijing, Ottawa and Mexico City will not be able to do anything now to prevent the imposition of duties.
As The Wall Street Journal wrote, the new duties could undermine the global trading system and seriously damage major sectors of the US economy, including the automotive industry, thus opening new opportunities for the PRC in international markets.
